Midland Boys finish 2nd Place in the State of West Virginia!!!! 5/23/07

Friday May 18th

The two day meet at Laidley Field started off great for the Knights as the boys 4x800 team won the first event at the state meet. After this, spirits were high in the Midland camp. Not long after the 4x800 guys (Aaron Ross, Cass Meadows, Dustin Stewart, and David Bias) came off the track, Coach Freedog called Coach Parsons and let everyone know that Cole Bowers had just been crowned STATE CHAMPION!!! He threw 50' 5.25" to win over a heavily favored athlete from Parkersburg. Ronnie Patrick did a great job and earned 3rd place in the shot!!! With the first two events over, Midland had a 26-8 lead over Wheeling Park.

The next final that Midland competed in was the shuttle hurdles. The guys (Brian Dilcher, Drake Kinzel, John Thompson, and Ryan Ramsby) earned 4th place by running 58.29 seconds.

Ryan Ramsby finished the shuttles and hustled over to the long jump with the rest of the Midland crew where he placed 5th with a jump of 20'- 7.25".

Chris Bowers threw 125-02 to place 10th in the state in the Discus.

The last event on Friday was the 3200 where Trey Beckett went up against one of the toughest fields that anyone has seen in a long time in Charleston. Trey ended up finished 10th in the state with a time of 10:07.51 seconds.

With the Friday events finished, everyone headed home or to their hotels to rest up. The score is Wheeling Park 36, Cabell Midland 32. The Herald Dispatch posted this article that ran in Saturday's paper.

Saturday May 19th

All of the coaches and some of the Midland athletes woke up at the break of dawn to head to Charleston for the 1st event of the day that had Daniel Jarrell competing in the High Jump. The bar started at a height of 6' which quickly cleared out most of the field. About 20 minutes after the start of the event, it was down to two people, Jarrell of Midland and Dewey McDonald of Jefferson. Both of the athletes cleared 6-4 and failed to clear 6-6. It came down to a judges decision (Which means they had to look back and see how many times it took the athletes to clear 6-4) and McDonald of Jefferson came out on top. Daniel Jarrell finished an excellent 2nd place!!

Next event for the Midland boys was the1600. This event saw David Bias and Trey Beckett going against the best in the state. David Bias finished a strong 9th while Trey Beckett finished 11th.

Brian Dilcher was next on the track in the 300 IH. He ran a fast time of 42.68 which earned him the honor of saying he is the 12th fastest 300 IH hurdler in the state of WV.

The 100m Finals were up next for Midland and that meant that Christian Edwards would be locked and loaded in the blocks ready to go. When the gun went off, the fastest 9 guys in the state of WV took off down the track. The photo on the line showed that Edwards earned the title of the 2nd fastest man in the state of West Virginia with a time of 10.86 seconds.

Next event was the 4x200 meter relay. The team (Rusty Ross, Ryan Ramsby, Anthony Lovejoy, and Christian Edwards) ran very strong but missed an exchange and was disqualified.

The 4x100 was next. Rusty Ross, Zach Steele, Christian Edwards, and Drake Kinzel ran really tough with a time of 46.22.

In the 800, David Bias came into the meet ranked #1 in the state and he proved that he deserved that title. David Bias was crowned State Champion in the 800 with a time of 1:59.22. He was the only one in the state to go sub 2:00.

With only two events remaining, word had it that Wheeling Park's coach was a little worried about what Midland was going to bring. Midland had some power in the 200 with Christian Edwards. After coming off a 2nd place finish in the 100, Edwards finished  a strong 6th and added another point to Midland's team score.

Cabell Midland Track and FieldThe final event was the 4x400 meter relay. Midland was ranked 5th in the state going into the final event. Wheeling Park was ranked 3rd . The Wheeling Park boys jumped up and earned their championship in this event while David BIas, Aaron Ross, Rusty Ross, and Ryan Ramsby took 5 seconds off of their season PR to run a 3:27.88 to earn them a strong 5th place.

After all of the dust settled from an exciting and wonderful weekend in Charleston, the results were handed out and Cabell Midland earned the runner-up trophy. This is a statement that lets the rest of the state know that EVERY YEAR, Cabell Midland Track and Field is a force to be reckoned with.

Congratulations to all of those who competed and all of those who trained and helped push their teammates.

Herald Dispatch has posted two articles about the state meet. Check out this one which was posted on Sunday May 20th or this one that was posted on Tuesday May 22nd.

Both Midland Teams Crowned MSAC Champs!!  5/5/07

Alicia ThomasCabell Midland went to Laidley Field on a damp Friday evening and took home both of the 1st place trophies. The girls team scored 119 points which was enough to beat Hurricane by 20 points. The girls were lead by a young squad. Freshman Elayna Conard finished 3rd place in a very fast 200m Dash. DeeDee Winningham finished 2nd in the 400 and was crowned champion in the 800. Alicia Thomas finished 1st and 2nd as well in the 1600 and 3200. Freshman Brittany Taft added 1 point to the team score with her 6th place finish in the 3200. Christine Schussler finished 5th in the 800.

On the throws, Ashley Morrow scored 2nd in the shot and 4th in the disc while teammate Tara Johnson threw far enough to earn 3rd place in the shot. The 4x100, 3x22, and 4x800 teams all earned 4th place honors wilth the shuttles squeezed out t 3rd place finish. The 4x400 team (Hewett, R. Thomas, Cassidy, Winningham) beat the rest of the competition and added 10 points to the team score.

The boys team outscored 2nd place St. Albans (who is coached by a former Midland coach) by 32 points. The team was led this evening by Daniel Jarrell, David Bias, and Christian Edwards. Each of these guys posted another win in their respective events. David Bias ran a gutsy race in the 1600 which almost claimed his eyesight and came back and ran super tough in the 800 for a win. Daniel Jarrell has kept his unbeaten streak alive by out jumping the competition by 4 inches. Christian Edwards beat an impressive group to claim the title as the fastest man on the track!

Trey Beckett ran a very strong race in the 1600. He even took the lead on the 3rd lap before giving up 2 spots to claim the 3rd place with another PR for him. Later in the evening, he ran a very strong 3200 and finished 2nd place. Over in the throws, Ronnie Patrick and Cole Bower finished 2nd and 3rd in the Shot Put. Not far away from the shot put area, Ryan Ramsby was jumping over 20 ft again to claim 2nd place in the Long Jump.

The relay teams added to the team score as well. The Shuttles, 4x800, and 4x100 all went home with 2nd place ribbons. The 4x200 team claimed 3rd place while the 4x400 team (A. Ross, R. Ross, Bias, and Ramsby) took home 1st place by beating 2nd place Nirot by over 5 second!!!

Next time the athletes put on their singlets, they will be heading to Hurricane for the 2007 Regional State Qualifier!!!

Midland Girls Compete at Red Devil Relays

I am sorry that I do not have much to say about this at this time, I will post results as soon as I get them. But until then, check out this article!!!

Midland Scores 76 points with 8 athletes in Louisville at the Bulldog Classic 4/21/07

Ryan RamsbyThe boys team packed up the vans and traveled to Louisville for a meet that dyestat.com says is has one of the most competitive fields in the area. Christian Edwards comes out in only his second meet of the year and is a double winner in the 100 (11.18) and 200 (22.88). That ranks him 5th in the 100 in the state of WV and 6th in the 200. David Bias wins the 800m Run with a time of 2:01.21 which is the fastest time ran for any AAA runner in WV!!!! He also finished 3rd in the 3200 by breaking the 10 minute barrier with a time of 9:54.60 to earn him 3rd place.

Ronnie Patrick was also a champion with a throw of 46-6 in the Shot Put. That is good enough to rank him 3rd on the performance list at Runwv.com. Dustin Stewart also steps it up in the 4x800 & sets a new PR of 2:05.55. He is only going to get better and better and is a great example of what off-season training can do for a runner!!!

Ryan Ramsby ran 16.23 to earn himself 3rd place in the 110HH and he jumped 19-8 for another 3rd place in the Long Jump. The 4x400 team (Ramsby, Ross, Bias, Stewart)  PR'd for the season with a time of 3:35.35 to earn 1st place ribbons. The 4x800 team (Ross, Meadows, Beckett, Stewart) also PR'd with a time of 8:28.90 which ranks them 1st going into the Gazette Relays this weekend.

Midland Boys compete at Dick Dei Track Classic in Wheeling, WV. 4/14/07

Daniel JarrellThe first event of the day led to one of the more pleasant surprises as Sophomore Trey Beckett broke his PR in the 3200 by 18 seconds to run a 9:58 which earned him 3rd place. Trey came back later in the 1600 and ran an impressive 4:49 out of the slow heat in the cold and rain. Good Job Trey!!! Daniel Jarrell showed the rest of the guys at the meet that he was serious about jumping. He out-jumped the rest of the competition by 4 inches to a height of 6ft 4in to claim the title.

Other notable performances on this day include the 4x800 team (Bias, Stewart, Meadows, and A. Ross) who ran a season's best of 8:29. The shuttles team broke the 1 minute barrier with a time of 59.7.

Midland Sweeps the Carlos Akers Memorial 4/6/07

Trey BeckettThe beginning of the meet seemed more like the beginning of a winter run instead of a spring track meet. The Carlos Akers Memorial was a chilly but successful evening for Cabell Midland. Once again, the Midland family came together to put on a tremendous meet with some quality runners. Doc Hale fired the first shot to start the meet promptly at 3200. A split second after he fired the shot, the girls, including Alisha Thomas and Brittany Taft, took off in the 3200 meter run. Alisha finished a strong 3rd behind Darby Mullens of Logan and Alex Dent of Hurricane.

Ryan Ramsby won high point honors for the guys side while DeeDee Winningham won high point honors on the girls side. Ramsby won the honor by jumping 21-0 to a win in the LJ and a 2nd place in the 110m HH and 300m IH. DeeDee accomplished the same feat in different events. She claimed the 400 and 800 and helped the girls 4x800 to a strong finish. There was also the meet record tying performance from Daniel Jarrell in the High Jump with a jump of 6ft 4in. Congrats Daniel!!!

As of Midnight, the Hearld-Dispatch has already posted a story about the meet. Click here to check it out!!! Click here for full results

Midland Teams Take Home 1st and 2nd at Teays Physical Therapy Inv. at Hurricane High School 3/31/07

David BiasWhen most athletes arrived at Hurricane High and unloaded their stuff , the day looked pretty bad. Some of the "lucky" athletes got to compete in the downpour that greeted them while "Smarter" athletes just brought their boat and were ready to paddle to a victory. The first event of the day was the 4x800m Relay  the girls got out to a 2nd place finish while the boys finished in a wet 6th place. No one really cared about the boys team finishing in 6th place there since the word on the street is that the entire goal of the day was to get Andrew Edmunds a ribbon. Since that was taken care of in the first race of the day, everyone could concentrate on their own races. Not long after Edmunds ran to the awards tent and got his pink ribbon, the skies cleared the way for some great racing.

Highlights from the day include Edwards win in the 100 and 2nd in the 200, DeeDee's 2nd place in the 400 dual with Carrier, David Bias and Trey Beckett's performance in the 1600 and 3200, Alicia Thomas's 2nd place in the 1600, Ellen Sparks' 3rd place in the 100m Hurdles, both 4x400 teams winning their respective events, Ashley Morrow and Tara Johnson going 2nd and 3rd in the shot, and Dustin Stewart's 2nd in the 800 with a time of 2:07.45.

The Midland boy were crowned champions with a total of 92 points over 2nd place Parkersburg who scored 79. The girls team scored 90 points to earn them 2nd place behind AA powerhouse Winfield High School who edged them out with 92 points.

Check out the complete results here.

Nolan QueenFreshman Run Strong at Hurricane 3/27/07

The Freshman team opened up big time with a strong performance at Hurricane High School on a perfect Tuesday Evening.

The night started off with the 4x800 team barely edging out a strong (and young) team from Barboursville!!! In a post-race interview, Nolan Queen was overhead saying, "I was a really worried about BMS, they have some terrific runners. I really don't know how we beat them."

That was just the first of many great performances. Lovejoy won the 100m Dash with a time of 11.77, 3rd behind some crazy Fairland runners in the 400 (54.67).  Hassan Sager (2:20) and Collin Merritt (2:21) went 2 and 3 in the 800. Nolan Queen took 1st in the 1600 (5:05.47) and the 3200 (11:24.89) while Micheal Niemann (11:45) took 2nd in the 3200. Bias and McCoy went 2 and 5 in the 65m Hurdles.
