5/17/08 Boys make it 9th State Championship title since doors opened up 14 yeas ago

Since being runners up a year ago, the boys were on a year mission to bring the state title back to Cabell Midland. Qualifying in 16 events with 16 athletes, the Knights were predicted to finish as Runner up again this season. However, Midland had different plans in mind and ended up dominating the state meet with a school record 101 points and beating runner up Hedgesville by 31 points. This title gave the Midland Boys their 8th title and the girls won back in 2006 for a total of 9 titles since the school opened their doors 14 years ago.

The boys were fined tuned and ready to produce 5 individual state champions along with 5 state runners up positions.  The 4x800 were first on the track and the first to take a state championship with the team of Aaron Ross, Dustin Stewart, Trey Beckett, and David Bias in a season best time of 8:08.96.  Next came the undefeated Shuttle Hurdle relay team of Brian Dilcher, Drake Kinzel, John Thompson, & Ryan Ramsby.  This team had set meet records in every meet they competed this season and their eye on the 27 year old state record of 55.86. The colder rainy weather and save exchanges would put Midland just short of the record, but their 56.22 victory is the fastest time this decade.  Midland’s next state champion came in Drake Kinzel who would not only produce one title, but two state titles with Kinzel sweeping the hurdle events.  He won the 300IH in a season best of 39.06 and came back a couple hours later to take the 110HH in 14.96. David Bias would be the 5th and final state champion for the Knights in the 800 meters. Bias’ run from the front tactic proved too strong for the rest of the state and his 1:56.22 victory broke his own school record and is now the number 2 time of the decade.

The boys produced 5 state runner up spots with Cole Bowers in the Shot Put with a PR of 50-9½. Ryan Ramsby’s 21-5 Long Jump performance, Brian Dilcher’s 13-0 school record jump in the Pole Vault, and David Bias’ 1600 & 3200 meter runs with times of 4:27.38 & 9:40.64.

Other state place performances were Daniel Jarrell 4th place in the High Jump (6-2), Cole Bowers 6th in the Discus (137-1) and 3rd place in the 4x400 meter relay team of Rusty Ross, Ryan Ramsby, Cullen Young, & Drake Kinzel with a season best time of 3:27.13.

On the girls side, Midland scored 11 points good enough for 18th place overall. Placing in the state were Dee Dee Winningham 5th in the 300IH (47.68), Ellen Sparks 6th in the 100HH (16.65), the Shuttle Hurdle relay team of Christina Hamer, Chera Rogers, Ellen Sparks, & Courtney Dilcher  4th (1:07.40), and the 4x400 meter relay team of Rachel Williams, Taylor Cassidy, Elayna Conrad, & Dee Dee Winningham 4th (4:10.56).

5/8/08 Midland Hosts the 2008 Region IV Meet

Cabell MidlandOn a beautiful evening at Cabell Midland High School, the teams did their best to qualify as many athletes as possible for the 2008 WV State Track and Field Meet at Laidley Field on May 16th and 17th. The field events started at 4:45 PM with Ryan Ramsby being one of the first athletes to set his entry mark of 21-02. He was the first Midland Athlete to claim a regional title on this evening. Brian Dilcher qualified for the state meet as well with a jump of 11-06 in the Pole Vault while Daniel Jarrell did his thing down on the High Jump with a jump of 6-02 to extend his season by another week!. Cole Bowers earned a 2nd place spot in the Shot and Discus. His throws earned him an automatic spot at the State Meet.

In the 100m Dash, Freshman Hannah Jordan qualified for the final and finished 4th in the finals. She will have to wait for all the regional results to come in to see if she has earned a spot at the state meet.

In the 200m Dash, Sophomore Elayna Conard is in the same spot as Hannah as Conard placed 4th in the finals and will have to wait and see if her time is fast enough!

In the 400m Dash, Junior DeeDee Winningham ran 59.24 to finish 3rd and qualify for the state meet. Rachel Williams finished 5th with a time of 1:03.66 and will have to see if her time is fast enough to quailfy. Rusty Ross ran an amazing 51.80 to finish 3rd and secure his spot in the state meet.

Ryan RamsbyIn one of the most exciting races of the evening, the 800m Dash was a true test of speed and power as the two best 800 runners in the state went to head to head for the first time. St. Albans Sophomore Andrew Bailey and midland's Senior David Bias fought a very tough and amazing race. In the end, Bailey of St. Albans edged out Bias with a time of 1:59.35 to 2:01.74. However, both athletes qualified for the state meet. Senior Aaron Ross ran a very tough and physical race to earn himself 3rd place and a automatic spot in the state meet with an amazing time of 2:02.56 just fending off the 4th place challenger.

In the 1600m Run, Bias ran a very fast race to finish 1st place with a time of 4:38.04 while freshman Ryan Smith almost ran his legs off (literally) in a valiant attempt to place 3rd and earn a spot at the state meet but he was out-leaned at the line and finished forth. (when this was written, his qualifying time ranks him #1 of the athletes who did not earn an automatic spot. We are waiting for Region II results to see if he has made it)

In the 3200m Run, Rachel Williams ran a very smart race to finish 3rd a good 15 seconds ahead of 4th place and secure her sport in the Friday Night 3200m Run! She was a very busy girl as she later competed in the 3200, 400, 4x200!!?!!, and 4x400. She showed everyone else how versatile she is. She was later overheard saying that she wished she could have done the Shot Put and Discus and wished that they had rock climbing as she would have qualified for the state in those events as well!! On the boys side, David Bias ran just under 10 minutes to be crowned the regional champion with a time of 9:59.77. Senior Andrew Edmunds left almost everything on the track and he went out like he normally does but lost pace and finished 6th overall. However, he will redeem himself later today (5/8/08) as he will formally sign with Rio Grande to run XC for them.

The 100m HH was a very interesting race for the girls. The Midland girls were late getting set and the starter didn't wait as he fired the gun. However, some of the girls are so stinking quick, that they don't have to be set in order to qualify for the finals and later the state meet. Junior Ellen Sparks and Senior Christina Hamer ran 2 and 3 in the finals to earn their spots in the state meet.

Drake Kinzel did his thing in the 110 HH. He was steady and strong as he always is. He was seen earlier wearing Smalley's hat and getting some of the energy from it. He was crowned the regional champion with a time of 15.04.

Kinzel and Ramsby both ran very strong in the 300m H. Kinzel was again crowned champion while Ramsby is on the bubble. He will have to wait for all the Regionals to post their results to see if he has another shot to race the 300's in a little over a week. DeeDee Winningham continued her success at the 300m Hurdles by setting a new track record last night of 47.10 to earn her spot in the state meet while being crowned regional Champion.

Christina HamerMidland's 4x100 teams both were crowned champions. The girls continued their sprinting rein of terror on the track by winning the 4x200 as well while the boys 4x200 team were satisfied with just qualifying in 3rd place

The 4x400 boys team ran a very exciting race and it came down to Freshman Cullen Young getting the baton just  a second before the #1 rated 400m runner in the state. It took everything Young had to fight him off but in the end, the Midland boys earned 2nd place with a time of 3:31.74 while the girls ran a great 4x400 to claim their 4x400 regional champion medals with a time of 4:08.76, which is the best time in the state of WV!!

The boys 4x800m Relay team battled for 8 laps around the track with the Parkersburg and St. Albans boys. In the end, Aaron Ross was able to stay strong and finished in 1st place with a time of 8:27.56. Trey Beckett, with his bionic knee, ran an excellent split to help the boys out.

The boys shuttles continued to show the rest of the state that THEY ARE THE TEAM TO BEAT. They broke their own track record with a time of 57.07 seconds to beat the rest of the field by a mere 2 seconds. The girls shuttle team wanted to make sure that the boys did hog all the spot light as they too, were crowned regional champs with a great time of 1:07.07.

The overall team scores declared the Midland boys as the Regional Champions with 159 points and the girls 3rd place with 99 points.

The Midland crew has just over a week to prepare for the 2008 WV State Track and Field Championships. The boys are ranked #1 and have a very good shot at being declared state champions. The girls team may not have a shot at winning it all but several individuals could leave Laidley Field with their own state titles.

5/3/08 Midland uses MSAC as tune up for Regionals

With the Regional meet only 5 days after the MSAC’s, Cabell Midland used the meet as a tune up for next Wednesday’s Regional Meet. The coaching staff limited athletes to the number of events entered and all athletes had certain plans for each event.

Cole Bowers wasted no time heaving the Shot Put 50-5½ and taking the individual title. Ryan Ramsby jumped a PR and new school record in the long jump with a leap of 22-2.25. Cole Bowers and Chad Hibner went 2 & 3 in the Discus and Daniel Jarrell jumped a season PR in the High Jump for 2nd overall with a leap of 6-3. Also in the field events, Brian Dilcher tied the school record and won the individual title at 12-6.

David Bias turned in a good double in the 800 & 1600 running PR’s in both. His 1:56.69 was a new meet and school record. The old record was held by stand out runner Casey Batey in 1:56.80. Bias’ 4:26.98 was 20 seconds faster than the next runner. Teammate Aaron Ross ran a PR of 2:01.89, which gave him a solid 400/800 double. Andrew Edmunds came in 2nd in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:24, while Freshman brother Matthew ran 11:20. Ryan Ramsby PR’d in the 300IH with a time of 40.07 and moves him to 3rd position in the state.

The relay events were solid for Midland. The Knights set 4 new season best in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, & Shuttle hurdle relay. The 4x800 ran 8:25 behind St. Albans. The 4x400 & Shuttles both won and the Shuttles set a new meet record with a time of 56.32. The team of Brian Dilcher, Drake Kinzel, John Thompson, & Ryan Ramsby are undefeated and almost 2 seconds better than anybody else in the state.

Next up for Midland is the Regional meet at Midland on Wednesday.

4/27/08 Midland Steps it up at Gazette Relays

Boys Summary:

Cabell Midland wins GazettesThe 4x800 of Aaron Ross, David Bias, Nolan Queen, & Dustin Stewart ran 8:09.77, which is a 23 second season PR. David Bias turned in a 1:56 split and this team leaps from the number 8 spot to the number one spot in the rankings.

Just as the 4x800 was finishing up, Cole Bowers won the Discus with a throw of 159-3, which ranks him number one in AAA. His 159-3 is only 2 feet off the school record.

Next up was the Shuttle Hurdle relay team and they had their sights set on the 27 year old Gazette Relay record of 56.5.  After Brian Dilcher, Drake Kinzel, John Thompson and Ryan Ramsby finished the race, the announcer came over the PA system and announced Midland had set a new Gazette Record in 56.37.

Last event of the night was the 3200 meter run and David Bias even split race gave him the victory in a new PR of 9:45. He kept his 400 splits between 68-75 per lap.

After the first day, Midland leads the competition with 32 points.

Brian Dilcher led off Saturday with a victory in the Pole Vault with a leap of 11-6. Don't be surprised to see "DILCH" get our 12-6 school record and possibly beyond. Next up was David Bias in the 1600 with a 2nd place finish in 4:32.

Ryan Ramsby joined teammate Drake Kinzel at the starting line for the 300IH. Ramsby has not run the 300's since out first meet. While Drake was winning, Rambo was close behind for 3rd overall in a time of 40.67. Cole Bowers stepped into the ring to win the shot put with a toss fo 50-2. Drake Kinzel had trouble with the last 3 hurdles in the 110HH and had to settle for 2nd overall. He still ran 14.95 and would've gotten our school record had he not crushed the last 3 hurdles.

The next race on the track was the most important and maybe tragic race in Midland's history. A lot of pride was on the line as the Coaches 4x100 defending champs stepped on the track. Diane Riley was the first legg and while she may be able to run 4 times a day for 2+ hours, a single 100m Dash may have done her in. 50m into the race, her Hamstring gave out on her and she hit the deck. She got back up and hobbled over to Michael Deering who was anxiously waiting and still attempting to get a good handoff. Once Deering had the baton, he took off and tried to make up ground as he handed it off to Jonathon Adkins. JA made up a lot of ground before handing it off to Rusty Parsons who finished very strong but to no avail. Four coaches from the North got together and put together a very strong team and Midland will have to wait another year to get their title back.

Our sprint relays both placed and Aaron Ross has become among the better 800 meters in the state with his 2:02.74. Freshman Ryan Smith set a new Freshman record int he 800 meters with a time fo 2:06.53. To end the meet, we threw together a 4x4 because of some nagging injuries. The team of Ryan Ramsby, Cullen Young, Aaron Ross, & Anthony Lovejoy, the placed 2nd overall in 3:32.02.

After the scores were tallied up, Midland claimed the championship plaque and won by 47 points. Jefferson was 2nd place team with 64 points. Next up is the MSAC Championship next Friday at Laidley Field.

The next time Midland will see action is Friday night at the MSAC Championships.

4/14/08 Midland heads south to the Taco Bell Classic in Columbia, SC

A small contingent of Midland athletes piled in the car early on Friday morning to head down to South Carolina to a very large and very competitive meet. The meet was so large that over 120 athletes competed in the 100m dash!!!  Out of those 120 or so athletes were 2 from Ona, WV. Sophomore Anthony Lovejoy and Senior Brian Dilcher both stepped in and ran 11.99 and 12.08 respectively. Ryan Ramsby and Tyler Barley entered the 200m dash and ran 24.17 and 25.10. Junior Dustin Stewart ran against some of the best in the nation in the 800 as he went 2:07.39.

One of the many highlights for Midland of the meet was Senior Drake Kinzel who ran a WV best 14.71 in the 110m High Hurdles which was the 6th fastest qualifying time out of 59 runners for the finals. John Thompson also ran the 110m High Hurdles for a time of 16.64.

The 4x100 team, 4x400, and 4x800 teams also had very strong performances.

In the field events, it was Brian Dilcher's time to try out the Pole Vault. He cleared an amazing 11-6 to make him a contender in the states. Ryan Ramsby continued his streak of strong jumps by jumping 21-01.25 which allowed him to place in the top 15. Tyler Barltey jumped 17-10.5.

Midland gets going again this weekend with back to back meets at Midland on Thursday for the freshman and Friday at Laidley for the Varsity.

4/4/08 Midland Boys come out on top as records fall more then the rain on a warm evening at Cabell Midland

Andrew EdmundsThe weather was threatening to make the 2008 Carlos Akers Memorial an exciting meet. The clouds dumped light rain on the athletes and spectators throughout the meet but that didn't stop a number of Midland athletes from breaking meet records, some that were 8 or 9 years old.

Andrew Edmunds was the first Midland athlete to take the track and he was the first to claim a victory. Edmunds ran a PR of 10:30 to capture his first varsity win of the season. Rachel Williams was the next to take the track and the next Midland athlete to take home a victory. She set a meet record in only her 3rd 3200m race in her life with a time of 11:45. David Bias took home two victories in the 800 and 1600 to claim the meet record in the 800 while running the #1 times for those distances in WV.

On the hurdles, the boys shuttles team let the rest of the state know that they are the real deal as they ran another 57 second race to earn them the victory and meet record. DeeDee Winningham ran her first hurdle race as a knight to a victory, new meet record, and 3rd overall ranking in WV in the 300m hurdles. The girls shuttle hurdle team ran 1:10 to earn second place behind a very good Winfield High School. Drake Kinzel continued his domination of the 300m hurdles with a meet record time of 39.59 seconds. He also finished second in the 110m HH.

Cabell Midland ThrowersThe girls 4x400 team claimed their first place finish with an amazing time of 4:21.48 and were able to get back inside before the rain that pummeled the boys 4x400 began falling. Even the pouring rain could not stop the Midland 4x400 boys from their 1st place finish. The boys 4x200m relay team claimed first place with a time of 1:35.33.

Out on the field events, Kinsey Hall and Taylor Cassidy had good showings in the Long Jump and High Jump while Daniel Jarrel and Cole Bowers held their own on the boys Long Jump and Shot Put.

This night began Midland's Spring break. The next meet for Midland is April 11th and 12th at the Taco Bell Classic in Columbia, SC.

3/28/08 Freshman Dominate Pirate Relays

Competing in their 2nd meet of the season, the Boys Freshman team turned in an impressive performance at the Pirate Relays. Midland won every relay except the shuttle hurdles, which they had no team entered. They also set 6 new meet records and one Freshman school record.

Cullen Young had a big night winning the 100 meters, Long Jump, and was a member of the winning SMR & 4x400 meter relay teams. His 19-9 long jump performance set a new meet & freshman school record. The old record was 19-7 set back in 1997 by track sensation, Jemmel Pursoo. Also, his anchor leg on the sprint medley and 11.96 100 meters were new meet records.

On the distance end, Ryan Smith continues his winnings ways in the 1600 meters with a new meet record and time of 5:07.36. He was also a member of the winning & meet record DMR and 4x800 meter relay teams.

Winning relay teams were the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 (new meet record), SMR (new meet record), & DMR (new meet record). Members of these teams were Ryan Smith, Cullen Young, Matthew Edmunds, Alex Parlock, Steven Newman, Corey Fetty, Davey Freeman, Bryan Hamlin, Matthew Kingery, and Matthew Sovine.

The Freshman won't be back in action until after spring break at the Midland Invitational on April 17th at Cabell Midland

3/21/08 Midland Boys Starts Season Strong

Rusty Ross, Tyler Bartley, Zach Steele, Antony LovejoyThe boys team traveled to Parkersburg on a very windy and cold evening to compete in the Kim Nutter Classic. Ryan Ramsby wasted no time getting things started with a new meet record in the Long Jump. His leap of 21-7 is a new PR and also the current  leader in that event across the state. Teammate Tyler Bartley in his first meet ever, proved he could leap and placed 2nd behind Ryan with a leap of 19-4.  Not long after Bartley left the pit, David Bias was on his way to victory in the 3200 meter run. His 9:56 broke the 10:00 barrier under very windy conditions, but didn't slow him down too much in the 800 meters. David's 2:00.69 win in the 800 meters just missed Ryan Jobes meet record of 2:00.60.

Drake Kinzel was anxious to tackle the hurdle events, which he blasted both the 110HH & 300IH  with new PR's and a meet record. His 14.79 in the 110HH finished him ahead of the number 1 returning AAA state hurdler from John Marshall. Undecided about the 300IH, Kinzel toed the line for an impressive new meet record and victory in a time of 40.10.

Kinsey HallThe very anticipated shuttle hurdle relay race had to wait until the next to last event. Despite the windy conditions, Midland powered to a new meet record of 57.36 breaking the record by 2.24 seconds, which was previously owned by the Knights.

The "Beefers" from Midland were busy spinning and heaving in the discus & Shot Put rings. Cole Bowers, last year's state champion, took hold of the shot and heaved it 48-4, which earned the 1st place medal. He tossed the discus 139-11 and came 1 inch short of winning that event.

On the other side, the girls team finished 6th overall and turned in some solid performances. The Lady Knights only win had to wait until the last event. The 4x400 was an exciting race with Dee Dee Winningham coming from behind to claim the number 1 spot over Parkersburg.  Dee Dee also finished 2nd in the 400 & 800 meter races.

Both the girls & boys teams won't be back in action until two weeks at the Carlos Akers Memorial at Cabell Midland's Track.

3/18/08 Freshman continue Winning Tradition

Alex ParlockOur Freshman team continues the winning ways at Cabell Midland High School. The Freshman team has not been beaten since 1998 and last night was no different. Despite losing hurdler sensation, Daniel Harrison, the day before with a broken collar bone, the boys stepped it up for the overall team title at the Hurricane Invitational. Cullen Young went 4 for 4 and scored 40 points, which earned him high point honors for the boys division. Ryan Smith turned in 3 strong distance races and won the 1600 & 3200 meter runs. His 2:14 split on the 4x800, pulled us in 1st place during his leg. The relays teams either placed 1st or 2nd, while the field events earned us 14 points of the 101 total points the Freshman scored.

The Varsity team opens up at Parkersburg on Thursday and our Freshman step back on the track at home for the Pirate Relays on March 28th.
