Only .03 separates Burcham from National
Record
Jacob Burcham had his eye on the Freshman National mile
record of 4:15.07 for several weeks leading up to the New
Balance National High School Track & Field Championship in
Greensboro, NC. Burcham opted to bypass the Freshman and
Emerging Elite divisions in which he would have won and been
named All-American in order to run against faster competition in
the Championship division.
Burcham
had run a 1200 time trial the week prior as a tune up for the
New Balance Nationals. He ran smoothly for 3 laps in a time of
3:06.11 on Finishlynx, which is under 4:15.07 mile pace.
However, in Greensboro, he would be in the unseeded championship
mile division and the pace would be a concern prior to the race.
Would somebody run a fast enough early pace for Burcham to
challenge for the record?
Burcham's race strategy was to be upfront by lap 2, but not
in the lead. He crossed lap 1 in a slow 65.45 and picked up lap
2 in 63.37 for a 2:08.81 half mile split. Nobody would push lap
3, so Burcham went to the lead with just over 600 meters to go.
Darrah Maximilian would quickly take over the lead from Burcham
with just over 500 meters to go, while Burcham would stay close
and cross lap 3 in 64.68 (3:13.49). Burcham would have to push
hard on the final lap to have any hopes to break the record.
Jacob made a bold move to the lead with 250 meters to go
while the crowd was well informed that the record was in jeopardy. Burcham would be on his own until the last 10 meters when
Maximilian would ease by Burcham at the tape. As Burcham's time
was announced over the PA system, the anticipated crowd would go
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" as Burcham time fell just .03,
a mere 3 hundredths of second short of the record. However,
Jacob Burcham's time of 4:15.10 goes down as the 2nd fastest
Freshman mile in US history. Burcham's final lap was 61.62.
Burcham was the only Freshman in the Nation to run in the
Championship division at the New Balance Nationals. He would
have won the Emerging Elite Mile by over 4 seconds and the
Freshman mile by over 2 seconds.
Burcham & Maximilian in the final meters
Burcham
has made quite the name for himself this past track season. He
has proved he can race with among the best despite only being a
Freshman. He has thrown down impressive times in the 800
(1:56.95), 1500 (3:57.71), 1600 (4:14.51), 3200 (9:15.94), and
his true mile time of 4:15.10. He is ranked the number #1 Freshman in the nation for the
1500 meters, 1600 meters, and the mile. He also set 10 new school
records at the Freshman and Varsity levels.
Now that Burcham will not play football this coming fall and
only concentrate on running cross country and track, he will be
a force to reckon with on the National level over the next 3 years of
his high school career.

Jacob Burcham - 2nd fastest Freshman
mile in US history
5/22/10
Midland has strong showing at states
Cabell Midland started day 2 of the WV State Championship
with Hunter Brown in the 400 meters. Brown's 52.13 was good
enough for 8th overall.

No sooner than Brown was post stretching after the 400
meters, Jacob Burcham was lining up for the 1600 meters. Burcham
would face a very tough field against Doughty (Jefferson),
Pellicione (Morgantown), McVicker (Fairmont Senior), & Wojick
(Wheeling Park). Burcham would lead through 750 meters before
Pellicicone took the lead and pushed hard with a strong 62+ 3rd
lap. Only Burcham & Doughty would respond to Pellicione's 3rd
lap and Burcham would retake the lead just over 400 meters to go
in the race. Burcham would hold the lead until a late Doughty
push for home that would put the Jefferson runner in the lead for good with 200
meters to go. Doughty's 4:14.30 would barley miss the state
record (Tennant - 4:13.84 - 2009) and Burcham held on to 2nd in
4:17.06. Pellicione crossed in 4:18.53 for 3rd, McVicker was 4th
in 4:26.02, Wojick 5th in 4:28.19 and Kirtner in 4:30.54 to
round out the top six.
Five runners from the top six return next year for the 1600.
With last year's 4:14.30 winning the states, West Virginia looks
to be setting some top times in the Nation for next track
season.
Burcham leads with 450 meters to go in the 1600
Matt
Bias would be next to the track in the 110HH finals. Bias would
line up in lane 7 against the best in the state of West
Virginia. Bias was out of the blocks good and raced down the
track to cross the line in a PR of 15.05. His time placed him
5th overall and gave Midland an additional two points to their
team total. Bias' consistency through-out the season placed him
in every meet among the best in the field. He has given 4 great
years to Cabell Midland's Program and will be deeply missed next
year.
After Bias finished the 110HH, Midland would only have two
events left in the meet. The 800 meters and the last event of
the day, the 4x400 meter relay.
Cabell
Midland would field 3 runners in the 800 meters. Jacob Burcham,
Ryan Smith, & Matthew Edmunds who all were on Midland's State
Champion 4x800 meter relay team, which won on Friday afternoon.
The 800 field was stacked with probably one of the toughest
fields in state history. As the gun went off, runners hurried to
the front to gain good position on the backstretch. A tight pack
would cross with one lap to go and Andy Bailey from St. Albans
would make the first real move. Bailey's move proved too strong
for anybody else to answer and he crossed the line in state
record time of 1:54.03. Timbers from Martinsburg would cross 2nd
in 1:55.44, followed by a battle for 3rd between Burcham &
Doughty. Doughty would edge past Burcahm in 1:56.66 followed
closely by Burcham in 1:57.01. Bond from Bridgeport 1:57.42 for
5th and Ryan Smith from Midland in 1:59.23 rounded out the top
6. Midland's, Matthew Edmunds, ran impressive for 7th in a new
PR of 2:00.77.
On a special note, all 3 Midland runners are back next year.
Smith & Edmunds finish strong in the 800 meters
The
last event of the day was the 4x400 meter relay. Cabell Midland
would run even splits to set a new season best of 3:31.18 for a
strong 8th place finish overall. Team members were Ryan Smith,
Hunter Brown, Mason Dino, and anchor leg Anthony Lovejoy. All
runners ran between 52 and 53 seconds on their relay splits.
Once the dust had settled, Cabell Midland would finish a
solid 6th place in the team division with 33 points. Jefferson
would lead all scores with 72 points followed by Hedgesville
with 60 points. Martinsburg would score 43 points for 3rd place
followed by George Washington (4th) 37 points, and Elkins (5th)
36 points.
Cabell Midland season would earn them a Regional & MSAC team
title along with several Invitational titles. The 2011 season
looks bright for Midland with many elite athletes returning next
year.

Midland's 4x800 take state title
Cabell Midland's 4x800 meter relay team got things started
right for the Knights on the opening day of the 2010 West
Virginia State Track & Field Championship with a relay state
title.

Lead leg, Ryan Smith, threw down a 1:58.20 split and handed
Midland the lead that the team would not relinquish the entire
race. Matthew Edmunds 2:02.81 followed by Michael Niemann's
2:02.97 would give anchor leg, Jacob Burcham, the opportunity to
just relax and maintain the final 800 meters. Burcham's 1:59.64
split produced a 8:03.62 team victory. Jefferson High School
would be 2nd in 8:08.99.
Next up for the Knights was Matt Bias attempting to qualify
for the 110HH finals on Saturday. Bias' 15.21 qualified him 6th
for Saturday's Finals. Josh Coats of South Charleston had the
top time of 14.73.
After Bias qualified for the 100HH, he joined his Shuttle
Hurdle relay team of Hassan Sager, Karl Shaver, and Nick Dino
for the state finals. Midland would run a season best of 59.11
good enough for 9th place overall.
Ryan Smith lead leg 4x8
The
final event of the evening would be the very anticipated boys
AAA 3200 meter run. The Knights would come with two very good
runners in the field, Jacob Burcham and Tyler Salmons. Burcham's
goal was to run 9:15, which he did, but fell short when Dayton
McVicker of Fairmont Senior finished with a strong homestretch
kick to pull away from Burcham in the end. It took a State
Record of 9:14.23 to beat Burcham, who produced a very
impressive time of 9:15.94. Tyler Salmons would finish a strong
7th overall in a time of 9:55.95.
At the end of the first day, Cabell Midland
would be tied for 3rd in the team standings with 18 points.
On Saturday, Hunter Brown will get things
started in the 400 meters followed by Burcham in his strongest
event, the 1600 meters.

Burcham & Salmons in the 3200 |
Jacob Burcham would lead Midland by winning the 1600 meters,
3200 meters, placing 2nd in the 800 meters, and was the lead leg
on Midland's winning 4x400 meter relay team. His 30.5 points
would lead all competition for High Point Honors.
Teammate, Tyler Salmons, would set a new PR in the 3200
meters with a time of 9:52.31 placing 4th and qualifying for
next week's WV State Championship.
Hunter Brown would race a "come from behind" tactic in the
400 meters to take 3rd overall in a time of 52.32 to also
qualify for the State Meet.
While Brown would qualify in the one lap race, it would be
Midland's Trio of Burcham, Smith, & Edmunds all qualifying for
the state meet in the 2 lap race of 800 meters. The Trio would
go 2-3-4 in times of 1:58.49, 1:59.78, & 2:02.68. These three
plus one could make for a very good 4x800 meter relay team for
next week's state meet.
Midland's 4x800 of Michael Niemann, Matthew Edmunds, David
Jobe, and Brian Lawhon placed 2nd in a time of 8:22.05
qualifying for the state meet. In the meantime, the Shuttle
Hurdle Relay team of Hassan Sager, Matt Bias, Karl Shaver, and
Nick Dino finished 4th and will also compete next week in the
state meet.

Evan Shoemaker |
The
field events have been a weak spot for Midland all season long,
but that would change on Friday evening. The Long Jump earned
Midland 20 valuable points and also qualified 2 athletes for the
state meet. Hassan Sager would win the event in a PR of 20-6,
while teammate, Jacob Reynolds, would place 2nd with a leap of
19-11.75. Evan Shoemaker would only miss qualifying by 1 place
and 8 inches, but set a new PR of 19-4 for 5th place overall.
Brett Adkins came so close to qualifying in the Discus, but
his 131-10 toss fell 2 inches shy of next week's state
championship meet.
In the 110HH, Matt Bias continues to stay consistent and
placed 2nd overall in a time of 15.32 to make next week's state
meet.

Hunter Brown |
With
one event left in the Regional meet, Midland held a slight lead
over Parkersburg South and Winfield High Schools. The 4x400 team
of Jacob Burcham, Ryan Smith, Jacob Reynolds, and Hunter Brown,
all knew the goal was to qualify and with their fastest time of
the season. The race developed into a 3 team battle among
Hurricane, Winfield, & Cabell Midland. In the end, Midland would
come from 3rd to 1st in the final 20 meters of the race to take
the victory. Their time was 3:32.22, best of the season, and
clinched the Regional Crown.
Cabell Midland's West Virginia
State qualifiers are the following:
400 meters - Hunter Brown.
800 meters - Jacob Burcham, Ryan
Smith, & Matthew Edmunds.
1600 meters - Jacob Burcham.

Midland rolls at Hurricane JV
Invitational
The boys from Midland came into the Hurricane JV Invitational
as undefeated and in the end remained undefeated. Midland
compiled 165 points to runner-up Hurricane with 114 points.
Evan
Shoemaker earned high point honors with runner-up finishes in
the Long Jump, High Jump, 300IH, and was on Midland's 3rd place
shuttle hurdle relay team. This marks the first time Shoemaker
earned this honor.
This
distance events were exciting to watch. Several Midland runners
were attempting to break 5 minutes for the first time of the
season. Midland runners knew to run a more even pace and not
take out too fast early in the race. They stayed on pace and
Jeremy Waugh crossed the line in 4:46.77 followed by Avery
Campbell in 4:50.29 and Adam Shaver in 4:59.99. All boys set big
PR's and the Midland Camp was very proud of them. Waugh came
back later to win the 3200 in a PR of 10:27.55 followed by Avery
Campbell in 10:47.49. Both boys are only Freshman.
In the field events, it was Brett Adkins winning the Discus and
4th in the Shot Put, while teammate Matt Kingery placed 3rd in
the Shot Put and 7th in the Discus. Daniel Parlock was 2nd in
the Pole Vault.
Niles Dailey continues to look good in the hurdle events and won

Midland finishes 2nd at Gazette Relays
Despite having Prom on Saturday and being short handed, the
Midland boys team scored 64 points at the Gazette Relays, which was good enough for 2nd
place overall.
Jacob
Burcham came back Saturday morning after running 9:20.34 for
3200 meters on Friday evening to face another tough field in the
1600 meters. Cody Pellicione of Morgantown wasted no time
setting a fast opening pace for the first 800 meters of the
race. The front of the pack came through the first 400 meters in
63.70 and Pellicione pushed hard to run 62.62 on the 2nd 400
meters as the runners passed 800 meters in 2:06.32. A slow 3rd
lap of 67.28 forced Burcham to take over the lead and finish in
60.91 for a New Gazette Relay record of 4:14.51. The old mark
was 4:19.1 set back in 1993 by Andy McClintic of Greenbrier
East.
Burcham's 1600 meter time improves his Freshman nation
leading time by nearly 2 seconds. He also improves on his
Midland's school records at the varsity & freshman levels.
Burcham has already qualified for the New Balance Nationals
in Greensboro, NC on June 18-20. His 4:14.51 puts him in the
Emerging Elite division.
Burcham runs 4:14.51 in 1600

An hour early before the 1600 meters, Hunter Brown competed
in the "Hot" heat of the 400 meters. Coming out of lane 1, Brown
got a slower start, but moved very quickly down the home stretch
to finish 5th in a season best of 52.28. Brown also made the 200
finals and finished 6th place with a time of 23.98.
Matt
Bias would run the 300IH for the first time this season in 41.77
for 8th overall.
Bias also qualified for the 110HH after running 15.38 in
Friday evening qualifying rounds. On Saturday afternoon, Bias
stepped on the track for the 110HH finals. Bias ran up front
until he hit hurdles 8 and 9, but still finished an impressive
2nd palce in a season best of 15.33 behind champion, Cam Viney
from Elkins, who ran 15.07.
Hunter Brown 400 meters
The 800 meters on Saturday afternoon was set for some fast
running with runners such as Andy Bailey (St. Albans), Brandon
Doughty (Jefferson), Dayton McVicker (Fairmont), Enze Bone
(Bridgeport), Cody Pellicione (Morgantown), Nathan Queen
(Capital) and Midland's Jacob Burcham. Queen of Capital jumped quick to the front and led the
runners to a 56.77 followed close by Burcham in 57.11. Burcham
would take the lead with about 300 meters to go with Doughty
close behind. Bailey of St. Albans used a last 200 closing kick
to pull even with Burcham & Doughty with about 80 meters to go.
Doughty proved too strong in the end and ran a state leading time of 1:55.64
to take the victory followed by Bailey (1:56.29) and Burcham
(1:56.95) to round out the top 3. Burcham's time of 1:56.95
currently ranks him number # 3 Freshman in the nation for 800
meters. Tretez Kinnaird from Butler High School in Kentucky
holds the number #1 ranking at 1:56.15.
Since
Midland had their Prom on Saturday and their upperclassman were
not available for most of the afternoon events, the 4x400 meter
relay team would consist of 4 Freshman in attempt to break the
Midland's school Freshman record of 3:43.52 set back in 2002.
Burcham would lead off in 52.35 handing off to Mason Dino who
ran a 53.82 on the 2nd leg. Brian Lawhon ran the 3rd leg and
kept pace with a 56.79 handing off to anchor leg David Jobe.
Jobe would only need around 60 to break the record and battled
down the homestretch to cross the line in 56.21 good enough for
7th place overall in the meet. Midland's finishing time would be
3:39.17 crushing the old record by 4.34 seconds.
Midland's Brett Adkins surprised all with his 133-6 in the
Discus good enough for the runner-up spot. Adkins was only 10
inches from winning the event.
Cabell Midland will be back in action next Friday at Laidley

4x800 wins Gazette Relays on Friday
night
Midland's 4x800 of Michael Niemann, Matthew Edmunds, David
Jobe, and Ryan Smith opened things up at the Gazette Relays with
a state leading victory of 8:19.28. Each of Midland's relay legs
ran from the front attempting to keep the team ahead of the
pack. The race became a two team
battle between Winfield and Cabell Midland. Ryan Smith sealed
the deal with his strong finish to overtake Joe Kirtner in the
final stretch.

Midland's
shuttle hurdle relay team of Hassan Sager, Karl Shaver, Nick
Dino, and Matt Bias finished 3rd overall with a season best of
59.22. This marks the first time this season that this crew has
run together and also the first time Midland has run under 60
sec in the shuttle hurdle relay.
In the 110HH trials, Matt Bias would qualify 3rd for Saturday's
finals with a time of 15.38. Bias will also be racing on
Saturday morning in the 300IH.
Hassan Sager smooth in shuttle hurdle relay
Matthew Edmunds runs strong 2nd leg on 4x800

The last event of the night was the AAA
Boys 3200 meters.
This was to be one of the most talked about races of the evening
with West Virginia's top 3200 meter runners in the race. Brandon
Doughty (Jefferson), Dayton McVicker (Fairmont), Cody Pellicione
(Morgantown), and Cabell Midland's Jacob Burcham would be among
the favorites to win the race.
The race did develop into a 4 man battle until Midland's Jacob Burcham and
Jefferson's Brandon Doughty surged away with 2 laps remaining.
Both runners stayed within a stride until Burcham sped away the
final 200 meters to take the victory in 9:20.31 to Doughty's
9:23.31. Midland's Tyler Salmons finally broke the 10 minute
barrier for a PR of 9:55.60 good enough for 5th place overall.
Burcham's 9:20.31 is the fastest time for a Freshman in the
nation. The old mark was Matthew Nelson from Barnegat Twp High
School in New Jersey with a time of 9:23.40.
Midland's Hunter Brown qualified for Saturday's final in the
200 meter dash. Brown will also be competing Saturday morning
in the 400 meters.

Burcham sets meet record in 1600 meter run
Cabell Midland’s Jacob Burcham set a new
meet record in the 1600 meters at the Tates Creek Commodore

Midland’s 4x800 meter relay team of Ryan

Nutter Classic
The boys team competed on
