Burcham sets American Record
Before
Jacob Burcham traveled to Lille, France, for the IAAF Youth
World Track & Field Championship, he had 3 goals on his mind. He
wanted to make the 1500 Finals, which he did. He wanted to place
in the top 8 and score for Team USA, which he did. And lastly,
he wanted to run sub 3:50, which he Crushed and set a new
American Sophomore record with a time of 3:46.55, which the old record
stood for 33 years. Jeff Warwick of Florida had the record of
3:48.40 set back in 1978.
Burcham
had a specific game plan before the race, which was to stay in
the middle of the "Chase Pack" and get pulled along to a great time.
He wanted to make a move between 200-300 meters left in the
race, which he went with 265 meters to go and hung tough to his
record setting performance. Burcham's plan played out like a
dream and now he holds the new American record.
Coach Chris Parsons and Mike Burcham (Jake's Dad) made the trip to
France to cheer on the young runner from West Virginia. I
was soooooooooooo pumped for Jacob after his race and just super
proud of his 2011 accomplishments, says Coach "P". Jacob Burcham
is the BEST West Virginia distance runner in state history at
the high school level. Parsons also stated, "Jacob has completed
his final chapter of his sophomore season and now can close the
book to a stellar season."
Burcham's time equates roughly to a 4:03.20 1600 meters
and a 4:04.61 actual mile. Jacob has set his Ultimate goal to
breaking 4 minutes in the mile before he graduates and with two
years left in his high school career, it has become a very
realistic goal on anybody's standards.
Jacob will now take a much needed break, but
it won't be long before he starts his training for the upcoming
Cross Country Season, which you can count on more record
breaking performances from the young distance star.

Burcham prepares for 1500 Finals
Less
than 24 hours until his 1500 Final, Jacob Burcham took a
relaxing day at the track cheering on teammates from the stands.
Burcham even had time to trade running apparel with other
athletes from different countries. So far Burcham has a jersey
from Italy and shirts from China and Ethiopia.
Burcham will have two familiar faces in the
crowd cheering him during the 1500 Finals. His Dad (Mike
Burcham) and high school, Chris Parsons, made the trip to
France. Also, West Virginian's have been able to watch
livestream of the race on the net. Just remember there is a 6
hour difference in time. His 4:45pm race in France will be
10:45am back home on Sunday.

Burcham qualifies for 1500 finals
The
best youth track & field athletes in the world gathered in
Lille, France for the 2011 IAAF Youth World Championship. Cabell
Midland's, Jacob Burcham, is among them. After being selected to
Team USA, Burcham flew to France last Saturday to prepare for
his 1500 heat on Thursday.
Burcham would face his toughest competition of
his career in Lille. Burcham goal was to qualify for Sunday's
1500 Finals and run
The African runners do not play around in the heats and it
was
Teshome Dirirsa of Ethiopia charging to the lead and winning
with a time of 3:45.32.
Yonas Habtemical of Eritrea would make way with Dirirsa in the
early stages of the race and separate himself from Burcham who
lead the chase pack. By the beginning of the last curve on the
final lap, Burcham had caught and passed Habtemical, but Burcham
was passed back coming out of the curve. Emilio Perco of Italy
would ease by Burcham in the final meters and Burcham would
throw down a desperate dive to the finish to try and secure an
automatic qualifying place into the finals. However, his 3:51.22
was fastest enough to advance him into Sunday's Finals.
Burcham has 2 more goals to accomplish on Sunday. He wants to
run sub 3:50 and place in the top 8 to score for Team USA.
He currently is ranked 9th, but only a second separates runner
5-9.
Burcham has the ability to go faster, but he will have to do on
Sunday against the best Youth in the World.

Burcham selected for Team USA
After
winning the 1500 meter trials, Jacob Burcham would have to wait
just a little longer than the rest of Team USA to learn that he
had been selected. When the team was announced, there was no
mention of Burcham. That is until the USATF Distance Coach (Lisa
Morgan) realized it was an oversight of the selection committee.
The committee for some reason did not translate Burcham's
4:07.66 Dream Mile into a 3:50 1500 meter conversion. It was
only a matter of time before Coach Morgan starting
announcing, "If Jacob Burcham is still here, please report to
the front of the room." After receiving a quick phone call, he
drove the 1 mile drive back to the selection room, and was
officially placed on the team.
Burcham had to go through the process of being
fitted into Team USA outfits for his trip to Lille, France.
Jacob will report to Coastal Carolina University Thursday for a
2 day camp and then fly out of Myrtle Beach to Lille, France on
Saturday.
The 1500 meter qualifying heats for men are on
Thursday, July 7th, and the Finals will be contested on Sunday,
July 10th. Burcham's goal will be to qualify for the finals, run
sub 3:50, and score for Team USA by placing in the top 8 on
Sunday.

Burcham wins 1500 meter USA Youth World Trials
The
gun sounded for the start of the 1500 meter final and the race
immediately became tactical until Burcham decided to take
command of the race with 600 meters left in the race. Burcham
would surge to the front and never looked back until he crossed
the line in 3:58.34 for the victory. Justin Brinkley from Texas
was 2nd in 3:59.50, while Andrew Whetten was 3rd in 4:04.53.
Athletes must wait until 6:30pm to see whether
they are selected to the USA Youth World Team that will compete
next week in Lille, France. If athletes are selected, they will
stay for a 2 day training camp at Coastal Carolina University
and fly to France on Saturday for 10 days. The 10 day trip is
fully paid by the USATF.

Burcham to compete in USA Youth World Trials
While most people head to Myrtle Beach, SC for
their summer vacation, Jacob Burcham will be competing in the
USA Youth World Trials attempting to earn a trip to Lille,
France.
Burcham performances this past track season
earned him a qualifying spot in the trials and if he finishes in
the top 2, he should secure a spot on Team USA that will head to
Lille, France to compete in the World Championship next week.
Jacob will be competing in the 1500 meter USA
Trial finals on Thursday morning, July 7th, at 10:30am. The team will be
announced at 6:30pm on Wednesday evening.

Burcham runs 4:07.66 !!!
Jacob Burcham set his sights on improving his
WV All Time Mile record at the Jim Ryun Dream Mile in New York
City against the best in the nation. Burcham would tuck in the
pack and hung tough through out the race. At one point in the
race, Burcham would drop to the back of the pack, but with 500
meters to go, he would make his long move to the finish. In the
end, Burcham would dive across the finish to secure his 7th
place finish and run an impressive 4:07.66.
A race of this caliber only invites the best
of the best and any finish is deserving of a standing ovation.

Midland Owns 4x800
When
the final call for the 4x800 meter relay is announced at the WV
State Track & Field Championship, Cabell Midland can be seen
warming up as one of the favorites. One would expect this since
Midland has won this event five times in the past six years.
Midland's 4x800 team of David Jobe, Brian
Lawhon, Matthew Edmunds, and Ryan Smith were just too strong for
anybody else in the field and cruised to a 8:02.10 state
championship. Their time was a new school record.
Lead leg, David Jobe, used even pace racing and gave Midland the
lead with a 1:58. Brian Lawhon took over duties and extended the
lead with a 2:00. Even though Matthew Edmunds tightened up on
Midland's 3rd leg the last 100 meters, his 2:03 still kept
Midland in the lead. Midland's final leg and experienced senior,
Ryan Smith, took control and his 1:58 secured Midland's victory.
With two seniors on the winning squad, the
Knights return 2 members and also have Jacob Burcham to add for
next year's 4x800 squad. With a 1:53.88, 1:58.56, and a 2:00.11
returning next year, the possibilities of another 4x800 state
champion team is very possible.

Burcham rewrites record books

When the new WV State Track & Field record books are written,
Jacob Burcham's name will be entered three times. His 9:11.29
3200 meters, his 1:54.01 800 meters and his stellar 1600 meters,
which Burcham ran 4:08.80 simply crushed the old mark of 4:13.84
and ranks him 5th in the nation. Jacob's Triple Crown
performance goes down as one of West Virginia's most impressive
performances in state history.
In the 3200 meters, Burcham's strategy of sit in 2nd place
and wait for his competitors to make a move didn't happen until
1100 meters to go in the race. After an opening lap of 70.89,
the next laps were 73.04, 72.18, 73.50, which totaled a 4:49.38
opening mile. On lap 5, the pace SLOWED to a 76.64 and
continued at this pace until Dayton McVicker made a move on the
backstretch. Burcham and Doughty immediately responded and the
race was on. Burcham pushed the pace down to a 64.04, then lap 7
went to 63.04, and Burcham ran away from Doughty with a 57.86 on
the last lap to set a new state record in 9:11.29. His last mile
was 4:21.68, 1200 was 3:04.94, and the last 800 was 2:00.90. One
event down, one state title, one state record.
After his 3200 meter victory, Burcham told his coach that he
wanted to go in the 4:08 range in the 1600 meters the next
morning. Knowing he had successfully completed work-outs
designed at 4:08 pace, Burcham toed the line on Saturday morning
in quest of his goal race. Just like in the 3200 meters, Brandon
Doughty would control the early laps opening in 63.48. Doughty
would hold that lead for another 300 meters until Burcham took
over with about 900 meters to go in the race. The 2nd lap
crossed in 64.57 (2:07.67) with Burcham still leading. Doughty
would attempt to take over with 600 meters to go, but Burcham
denied him the lead and cranked the pace up to cross the 3rd lap
in 61.08. Burcham proved too strong for Doughty on the last lap
finishing in 59.67 (2:00.75) and crossing the line in an amazing
4:08.80 for a New State Record. His 4:08.80 also broke the
All-Time 1600 meters, which he held at 4:10.15. Two events down,
two state titles, two state records.
Later that afternoon, Burcham would attempt to claim the
"Triple Crown" by winning the 800 meters. This time it would be
Burcham leading from the gun with Doughty on his shoulder. The
1st lap would cross in 58.42 with Burcham still leading. Doughty
would make a bid for the lead with 250 meters left in the race,
but Burcham was not having any part of relinquishing his lead.
He would open a 5 meter lead coming off the final turn with
Doughty making one final push for the lead. Only meters from the
finish line, Doughty would make one final desperate "DIVE" to
the finish, but it wasn't enough to beat the Sophomore
sensation. Burcham would cross in 1:54.01 (55.59) for another
state record. Three events, three state titles, three state
records.
There have been many great distance runners over the years
compete at the West Virginia State Championship, but none quite
the talent level as Jacob Burcham. His "Triple Crown"
performance setting state records in each event goes down as the
"BEST" performance ever by a high school distance runner in West
Virginia State history. The exciting thing for the track fans is
that they get to enjoy watching Burcham for 2 more years.

up spot in a new school record of 3:25.29.

Burcham breaks 34 year old mile record
When Jacob Burcham was selected to compete in
the prestigious Penn Relays, he set his sights on Bill Posey's
34 year old West Virginia mile record of 4:12.30 set back in
1977. Despite the windy and overcast weather conditions, Burcham
took the lead at the 800 meter mark passing through in 2:07.61.
Burcham would force the pace and lead until Chad Noelle out of
New York took over with about 210 meters left in the race.
Burcham would follow Noelle's move, but it would be Matt
Jablonski from Maryland charging to win in 4:10.36. Chad Noelle
was 2nd in 4:10.37, while Burcham finished a solid 3rd in
4:11.63. Jacob's last 800 meters was in 2:04.02. Jacob's mile
time converts to a 4:10.17 1600 meters.
Burcham would walk away from the Penn Relays as
the fastest West Virginia high school miler in state history.
Jacob is certainly not done with records considering he is only
a sophomore. Also, Burcham's time is ranked number #1 Sophomore
in the Nation and number #6 among all grade levels.
Burcham will step back on the track next
Friday at the MSAC Championships at Laidley Field in Charleston.

taking the long trip to Philadelphia, PA. Burcham is one of only
15 runners to be selected to compete in the mile

The boys will not only be attempting to make
moves on the track, but also the dance floor too. This is also
Prom weekend for Cabell Midland High School.
4/26/11

for a JV Invitational. These meets ensure that all Midland
athletes get enough opportunity to compete during season.
Steven Egnatoff would start things off in the

Midland splits team
Spring Break didn't stop Midland from
practicing or competing. However, the team did split up on
Saturday in order to give all athletes an opportunity to
compete.
A select group went to Louisville for the Male
Invitational, while a select group competed in the Ray McCoy
Invitational at Huntington High School.
Once again, the weather was a challenge with
gusty winds at both meets and rain was included in the
Louisville meet. However, the boys still managed to thrown down
some impressive performances despite the conditions.
In Louisville, Jacob Burcham would compete in
his first 3200 meters of the season and went untouched in a
state leading 9:21.82. He later anchored the winning Distance
Medley cruising the 1600 in a comfortable 4:25. Teammates
included Tyler Salmons (1200), Brian Lawhon (400), and Ryan
Smith (800).
David Jobe would be the big surprise of the
meet winning the 800 meters in a PR of 2:02.27. While Jobe was
winning the 2 lap race, his teammate, Jacob Reynolds was winning
the one lap race. Reynolds winning time of 50.80 in the 400
meters ranks number #1 in the state so far this season.
Back in Huntington, it would be Freshman Zach
Sellards taking 2nd in the 100 meters with a time of 11.30.
However, due to electronic malfunction, his time was hand held
and can not be counted as a new Freshman record. His 11.67 in
the trials would be just short of the 11.66 record set back in
2002 by John Saunders. Sellards would also place 2nd in the Long
Jump with a leap of 19-1.50.
Midland's Shuttle Hurdle Relay Team of Davey
Freeman, Evan Shoemaker, Niles Dailey, and Ethan Smith would
take first place honors. Jeremy Waugh and Steven Egnatoff would
lead Midland distance crew placing 3rd and 4th in the 3200
meters and 4th and 5th in the 1600 meters.
Other highlights for Midland were Evan
Shoemaker (2nd High Jump & 3rd Long Jump), Daniel Parlock (3rd
Pole Vault), Ethan Smith (3rd 300IH), Mason Dino (4th
400meters), Nile Dailey (4th High Jump), and Matt Kingery (4th
Shot Put).
Next up for Midland is the Huntington JV
Invitational, Gazette Relays and Penn Relays in 2 weeks.

Midland produce at Hurricane Invitational

the athletes current racing level and plan future training for
the athletes.

Jacob Burcham 1600 season debut of 4:13.69 at
the Carlos Akers Memorial acknowledges that he is starting off
ahead of where he left off last season. Despite the windy

end of April. He later came back in the 800 meters with a state
leading time of 1:57.47.
While Burcham was setting fast distance times,
teammate, Jacob Reynolds was making some noise himself in the
