Beckett challenges course record
On
a cool and foggy Saturday morning at Barboursville Park,
Trey Beckett set the early pace at the Bill Hill 2 mile
Invitational. Beckett’s pace and time of 10:12 was only 3
seconds short of a new course record, which is held by Eric
Cooper set the record back in 2004 with a time of 10:09.
Sophomore sensation, Ryan Smith followed Beckett with a time
of 10:27, while Nolan Queen ran a solid 3rd place
in a time of 10:49.
On the girl’s side, it was Jorden
Thornton crossing the finish line first in an impressive
time of 12:44. Cabell Midland will have to wait another year
for Thornton because she is only an 8th grader
competing for Milton Middle school this season. Rachel
Williams was only 8 ticks back of Thornton with a time of
12:52, while teammate Dee Dee Winningham was 3rd
in a time of 13:25.
After the 2 mile race, most of the
middle school runners from Milton and Barboursville toed the
line for the Bill Hill 1.3 mile race. Milton Middle school
runner, Trey Martin, led from start to finish in a time of
8:52 for the overall champion followed by Barboursville’s
Joey Newfeld in a time of 9:00. Barboursville’s Kasey Libby
ran 10:07 to round out the top three.
In the female division, three girls
battled through out the race and it came down to the last 30
meters of the race to determine the overall champion. Brie
Bellomy, only a 6th grader from Milton crossed
the line first in a time of 9:17 followed by Milton’s Kelsey
Dillon in 9:19. Barboursville’s Kendall McNeely was a close
3rd in 9:24.
Next up for Cabell Midland, Milton
Middle, and Barboursville Middle schools will be the
Hurricane Invitational on August 28th at Teays
Valley Park.
8/10/08 Cedarwood produces
record numbers
Cabell
Midland cross country kicked off it’s season with the annual
Cedarwood Classic held on August 9th. The Cedarwood Classic
is a race put on by Cabell Midland’s “Oldest Active Alumni”,
Cory Richardson. Cory was on Midland’s first XC team, which
started back in 1994. Cory was a member of Midland’s Elite 7
and part of Midland’s first state track championship team in
1996. Cory designed and built the Cedarwood course and has
maintained it every year for the Cedarwood Classic.
This year’s race attracted over 80 runners with 3 separate
races. The challenging 5K, 1.5 mile, and the “Little Tikes
Dash.” Over 100 spectators were on hand to cheer the runners
to some great performances. Midland Alumni, David Bias, set
a new course record in an impressive time of 16:55. The old
course record was 17:05 held by the famous Casey Batey. In
the female division, veteran Rhonda Bell was victorious in
23:23. In the 1.5 mile race, Middle school runner, Jared
King took the victory in 9:47 just two seconds over
Midland’s Freshman Tyler Salmons. In the girls division,
Alex Ellis won in 11:00.
After the awards and some good eating, the long anticipated
Cedarwood Classic Badminton Tournament took shape with some
serious players. Cass Meadows and David Bias were heard
bragging they would defend their 2007 title, but Cory
Richardson and David Owens had different plans. In the
Championship game, Richardson & Owens were just too strong
and came away as the 2008 Champions.
A special thanks to Cory Richardson and his family for
giving Cabell Midland and Barboursville Middle school the
opportunity to be part of an AWESOME day.
