"McCoy Award" Burcham's latest honor
Only
a week after being named Gatorade WV Boys Cross Country Runner of the
Year, sportswriters from across the state agreed the 2010 McCoy Award would
belong to Jacob Burcham. The McCoy Award goes to the Best Male Track &
Field Athlete in West Virginia, which includes high school, college &
post-collegiate athletes.
Burcham's has a long list of top accomplishments
during 2010 including All-American, State Champion, and being ranked
among the best high school distance runners in the nation. And he's only
a Sophomore.
Jacob
becomes only the second high school sophomore to win the McCoy Award.
Steve Taylor of St. Marys and currently Richmond University Track Coach
won three straight awards including his sophomore year of 1981. Randy
Barnes, 1996 Olympic Shot Put Gold Medalist, is a past McCoy Award
recipient.
Burcham will enter his sophomore track season attempting to crack sub 4:10 in
the 1600 meters, which would be a 4.51 improvement from his Freshman
season. He has PR's of 1:56.66 for 800, 3:57.71 for 1500 meters, 4:14.51
for 1600 meters, 4:15.10 for the mile, and 9:15.94 for 3200 meters
during his Freshman season. His 1500, 1600, and mile times were ranked
as the number #1 Freshman in the nation.
This past Cross Country season he ran a season best 15:05 at the
Midwest Meet of Champions and ran an impressive course record of
15:12.16 at the WV State Meet for the individual state title. He
continued his Cross Country at the NXN Southeast Regionals where he
qualified for the NXN National Finals and earned All American status
with his impressive 16th place overall in Portland, Oregon.

Burcham named Gatorade Runner of the Year
Jacob
Burcham continues to add to his list of impressive running
honors. His latest is the 2010-2011 Gatorade West Virginia
Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Jacob is the first
Midland athlete to win the prestigious award.
Burcham's season highlights ranged from the state level to the
national level. In his short Cross Country career, Burcham has already
earned All-American status at the NXN Finals in Portland, Oregon, which
makes him the first WV runner ever to achieve this honor. Jacob earned
his trip to the NXN Finals at the NXN Southeast Championship in Cary, NC
where he placed 5th despite cramping the last mile.
Burcham dominated on the state level. He went undefeated against West
Virginia runners and led his team to an undefeated season against WV
teams. He set a course record on every West Virginia course he competed
on this season (Geico Classic, MSAC, Regionals, & WV State
Championship). His State Champion performance at the 2010 WV State
Championship goes down as one of the most impressive performance on WV
soil by a High School runner. His 15:12.16 smashed his own course record
by 37 seconds.
Burcham has done all of this and he's only in his sophomore year. The
next two years look to be very promising for the Midland runner. He
already ranks among the top WV runners in state history and is on target
to be the "Best" WV high school runner to come out of this state.

Midland Championship T-Shirt Design
Released
The 2010 Midland XC State Champion t-shirt was passed

Burcham earns All American
Under
some of the most "X-treme" conditions that Cross Country has to offer,
Jacob Burcham closed out his 2010 season as an All American. The NXN Finals in Portland,
Oregon brought together the most talented runners from across the nation
to decide who was the best across the land. The meet did not disappoint
with the course offering not a single dry area during the race. At
times, the mud came up to the runners calf muscles making it impossible
to produce a fast time.
Burcham lined up on the starting line in anticipation of making the
All American team, but could not imagine what he had to endure to
achieve this prestigious honor. Burcham would drop back as far as 28th
place, but in the end made his move when it counted. After the race,
Burcham made the statement that his arms, abs, and thighs burned in a
way he had never experienced. However, you can bet the All American
status made the burn worth it.
The first 21 runners to cross the line earned 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team
All American. Jacob sealed his 3rd team All American honor by placing
16th place overall, which was only 2 places and 2 seconds out of 2nd All
American team. Each team is comprised of 7 runners with 1st-7th (1st
team), 8th-14th (2nd team), and 15th-21st (3rd team). With 15 of the top
18 runners being seniors, Burcham will return next year in the number 3
spot.

Salmons wins Off Road Challenge
While
Burcham was in Portland preparing to run his biggest race of the season,
several of his teammates were back in Huntington racing the Huntington
Off Road Challenge sponsored by Roberts Running Shop and the Huntington
Road Runners Club.
It would be All-Stater, Tyler Salmons, winning the overall title in
19:47 on a very challenging course thru the trails of Ritter Park.
Midland's Assistant Coach, Diane Riley, would take the women's division
in 24:09. Also running the Off Road Challenge were Steven Egnatoff,
David Jobe, Jeremy Waugh, Avery Campbell, and Ryan Smith.
The boys wore the new "Ona Elite" jersey's for this race.
The race started in the field of Ritter Park and continued through the
trails, which offered big hills, single lane paths, and even trees the
runners had to hurdle or climb to get over.
Next up for the Ona Elite squad will be the Huntington Winter Series
in Barboursville Park. The Winter Series offers a total 3 races with one
in December, one in January, and one in February. The races are a 3
miler, 4 miler, and a 5 miler all in Barboursville Park.

Burcham ready for "Mudfest"
The
sun popped out on Friday afternoon while the NXN runners toured the
course, but 6 days of rain prior leaves Portland Meadows a muddy mess.
However, this is Cross Country and the elements is what makes this sport
a true test of your mental and physical abilities.
Jacob Burcham ran the course on Friday afternoon and simply stated;
"I like this course." He along with nearly 400 runners will lace up
their spikes on Saturday morning to determine how you stack up against
the best in the nation. Burcham will not only lace up his spikes, but he
will also tape them to his feet. The mud on this course has been known
to suck them right off your feet during the race. Also, each year
runners come off this course with various spike wounds that will be
treated in the medical tent afterwards.
Burcham is among only 4 sophomores that qualified individually for
this event. The experience will be valuable in the final two years of
their high school career.
Lukas Verzbicas comes in as the favorite with many other runners such
as last year's winner Craig Lutz, Jim Rosa, Edward Cheserek, Ammar
Moussa, Elias Gedyon in contention of winning
the individual title. American Fork out of Utah and Arcadia out of
California comes in as the favorite teams. Of the top 25 runners in the
nation, 20 of them will be at NXN, while only 9 will race in the
Footlocker Finals next week in San Diego, CA.
Burcham will face his biggest challenge of the season on Saturday to
determine just how good his sophomore Cross Country season ends. With
his strong mental capacity, hard work ethic, and his natural talent,
Burcham should put West Virginia on the nation map in the sport of Cross
Country after Saturday.
This event will be on Live Webcast at
http://www.runnerspace.com/nxn. The Girls
Championship race starts at 10:25am (Portland time) and 1:25pm (West
Virginia time). The boys race starts at 11:35am (Portland time) and
2:35pm (West Virginia time). The Webcast will be having pre-race
coverage starting at 10:05am (Portland time) and 1:05pm (West Virginia
time).
Race weather looks to be 42' degrees with partly sunny and partly
cloudy skies. The wind is suppose to kick up to 15mph with gust of 25mph making it feel
like 30'-35' degrees. However, course conditions will still be wet and muddy
making it very challenging for all the runners. Despite the most
talented field in NXN Final's history, don't look for any new course
record on Saturday.

Burcham ready for NXN in Oregon
After
4 months since the official start of Cross Country season, Jacob Burcham
is ready for his final race of the 2010 XC season. Jacob will be flying
out of Columbus, Ohio on Thursday morning and arriving in Portland by
noon (Pacific time) for the NXN Championship event. This is an event
when all polls are thrown out and final rankings are settled on the XC
course in Portland, Oregon. The best runners and teams from across the
nation have earned the right to race one last time and determine who is
the "Best."
After Saturday, Jacob Burcham will know just how he stacks against
the rest of the nation.

Burcham heading to Portland
Jacob Burcham faced his biggest challenge of the season in Cary, NC
at the NXN Southeast Regional. Not only was the
competition challenging, but a major cramp past the 2 mile marker
put Burcham in jeopardy of qualifying for the NXN Finals in Portland.
Burcham was leading and in control, but just past the 2 mile marker, a
major side stitch came out of nowhere and attacked Burcham putting him
in a very uncomfortable situation. With just over 800 meters to go (all
uphill), Burcham faded back to 9th with no hopes of catching such a
talented group of runners. However, with 400 meters to go and now in
13th place, Burcham dealt with the cramp and started reeling runners in
1 by 1 and captured 5th place just inches from 4th to secure his spot to
Portland for the NXN National Championship. Burcham ran 15:23 with
Armando Del Valle from Florida taking the win in 15:15. Burcham is
the first runner in West Virginia history to qualify for the NXN finals.
Midland had 9 other runners competing at the NXN on Saturday. In the
Boys Championship race, it was Tyler Salmons 63rd (16:10), Jeremy Waugh
94th (16:21), Avery Campbell 97th (16:23), David Jobe 162nd (17:02),
Jared King 17:12 (180th), and Ryan Smith 17:27 (204th). In the Boys
Open, Andrew Ferguson was 99th in a time of 17:54, while teammate,
Matthew Edmunds, finished 107th in 17:57. Midland's lone girl runner,
Jorden Thornton ran an impressive 19:42 for 74th place overall.
The Midland runners competed for "Ona Elite" and finished a solid
14th best team in the Southeast Region. The Southeast Region includes
the states of West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee,
Kentucky, and the District of Columbia. With 5 Sophomores, 1 junior, and
losing just 1 senior, Midland has the ability to be a major threat next
year in the Southeast Region.

Burcham runs 4:16.18 to take 3rd Ave Mile
One
week after the WV State Cross Country Championship, Jacob Burcham and
his teammates would go from
trails to the roads and compete in the 3rd Avenue Mile in downtown
Huntington. Despite not training for a mile race, Burcham would run a
impressive 4:16 to easily take the win. Former Midland State Champion,
David Bias, would set the pace most of the way with Burcham hanging on
his outside shoulder. With less than 400 meters to go, Burcham would
finally surge to the front and power in for the victory. Bias would
cross 11 seconds later in 4:27.
Other Midland runners competing would be Matthew Edmunds in 4:37,
Tyler Salmons (4:38), Ryan Smith (4:41), Avery Campbell (4:41), David Jobe (4:45), Jared King (4:49), Eric Wooten (4:55), and Steven Egnatoff
(5:04).
On
the girls side, Jorden Thornton, would take the easy victory in 5:36.
She led from start to finish with her closest female competitor nearly a
minute behind. Thornton's talent are not only in the running world, but
also on the soccer field. She competes on her high school team along
with competing on an elite travel squad, while juggling Cross Country in
the process.
All the above Midland runners are preparing for the upcoming Nike Southeast
Regional meet, which will be held on November 27th in Cary, NC. The top
2 teams and top 5 individuals qualify for the NXN Championship held in
Portland, Oregon on December 4th.

At the WV State Cross Country Championship, Cabell Midland would put
5 runners on the awards podium earning them All-State honors. This marks
the 33rd time that a Midland runner has earned the right to stand among
the top 10 runners at the WV State Championship.
Jacob Burcham - State Champion (Sophomore), Tyler Salmons - 6th place
(Junior), Jeremy Waugh - 8th place (Sophomore), Ryan Smith - 10th place
(Senior). On the girls side, Jorden Thornton - 10th place (Sophomore).
With only 1 senior among these top 5 runners, Midland future looks
bright.

Midland crowned State Champions
For
the second year in a row, the boys from Cabell Midland proved too strong
for the competition and were crowned the 2010 WV Cross Country State
Champions. Midland's sophomore sensation, Jacob Burcham, used a well
planned race strategy to overpower the rest of the competition and win
the individual state title with an impressive time of 15:12.12.
Burcham's time smashed his old course record by 37 seconds.
It would take more than Burcham being the individual state champion
for Midland to win the team title. Midland would put 4 boys on the
All-State team, which broke Midland's previous record of 3 runners set
back in 2002 & 2004. Joining Burcham on the All-State team would be
Tyler Salmons (6th), Jeremy Waugh (8th), and Ryan Smith (10th). Avery
Campbell came in a strong 14th sealing the deal for the state title.
Midland's score of 35 points outdistanced runner-up Jefferson by 25
points. David Jobe would come in 32nd and Jared King (49th) rounding out
Midland's Elite "7".
This marks the 7th State Championship title for the Knights since
opening their doors back in 1994. Midland has also been state runner up
4 times on the boys side and 2 times on the girls side.
Midland will return 6 of their top 7 for next season along with 17 of
their top 20 runners.
10/21/10
Regional Champions

Cabell Midland boys team came into the Regional Championship as the
heavy favorites. The boys would not disappoint by placing 5 runners in
the top 10 despite not having two of their top 7 runners competing.
Jacob Burcham would cruise to the victory and setting a new course
record in the process. Every meet this season, Burcham has set a new
course record on WV soil. He intends to do the same next week at the WV
State Championship. Rounding out Midland's top 7 were Jeremy Waugh
(4th), Ryan Smith (5th), Avery Campbell (8th), Jared King (10th), Andrew
Ferguson (18th), and Matthew Edmunds (19th).
At next week's WV State Championship, Midland will be at full force
in an attempt to win back to back State Titles. They will face a very
strong Jefferson who is currently ranked number #2 in the state.
On the girls side, Midland found out only minutes before the race
that only 2 teams would qualify from this Region. Even being ranked 7th
in the state, Midland would have to upset Hurricane or Parkersburg who
were ranked number 5th & 6th respectively. Despite placing 2nd, 9th,
11th, 14th, and 24th, it wasn't meant to be and the Lady Knights will
not compete as a team next week in the WV State Championship. However,
Jorden Thornton and Kelsey Dillon will represent Midland as individuals
for the Lady Knights.
10/20/10
Wooten sets New Record at Last Chance

A day before the Regional Championship,
non-competing Midland Regional runners would line up on the cross
country course for one "Last Chance" to compete. It would be Eric
Wooten, a stand-out Freshman, that would
crush the old course record and set a new one with an impressive time of 13:30. The old mark was 13:53
set back in 2005 by All-Stater Trey Beckett. Any other season, Wooten's
talent would earn him a spot in Midland's Elite "7", but this season has
been a year that would take sub-17 effort to earn one of those spots.
Wooten's season best came at the Trinity Invitational where he ran 17:06
and has him at a ridiculous number 11 spot on Midland's squad.
On the girls side, it would be another Freshman
taking top honors. Casey Ellis would cruise to the victory ending her
season in winning fashion. Ellis was also bidding on Midland's Elite
"7", but came up a bit short and will be Midland's top alternate for the
WV State Championship.
At today Regional meet, Midland will not use their entire Elite "7"
due to a run off for the number 7 spot. However, at next week's WV State
Championship, Midland will be at full force in an attempt to defend
their State Title.

Midland Prepares for Regional
Championship
On Thursday, Midland's Cross Country squad will travel to Hurricane
for the Region IV Cross Country Championship. The meet serves as the WV
State Championship qualifier and Midland will have to place in the top 3
teams to move onto next week's State Championship to be held at Midland
on Saturday, October 30th.
On the girls side, the Lady Knights will be in a tight team race with Parkersburg and Hurricane. Jorden Thornton will go up against
Madison Hill from Parkersburg for the individual title.
On the boys side, Midland is heavily favored to take the team title,
while Jacob Burcham should defend his individual title with very little
opposition.
Race times are:
4:30pm - Girls Race
5:15pm - Boys Race

Midland
Girls Step it up at MSAC's
The Midland girls have made a gradual improvement all season, but
today was a bigger jump in the right direction. The girls would finish
3rd overall, but only would be 2 points back of Hurricane and 9 points
from overall team Champion, Parkersburg.
Jorden Thornton continues to be consistent for the Lady Knights
coming in 2nd overall earning All MSAC honors. She would do a quick warm
down and off to Charleston for a varsity soccer game. Joining Thornton
on the 1st team were Alex Ellis and Kelsey Dillon finishing 7th and 8th
overall. Clara Stephens would finish a solid 13th overall earning 2nd
team All MSAC. Rounding out Midland's top 7 would be Abby Triplett,
Jorden Colliflower, and Morgan Chittum. Also competing for the Lady
Knights were Casey Ellis, Shelby Nelson, Jamie Shussler, Hannah Asebes,
Jess Hutchinson, and Laken Adkins.
The girls will face off again with Parkersburg and Hurricane next week at the
Region IV Championship at the Teays Valley Wave Park in Hurricane.
The meet serves as the WV State Championship qualifier. The
meet will be Thursday (October 21st) with the girls race at 4:30pm followed by the boys
race at 5:15pm.
Midland Boys Dominate MSAC's
With just over 2 weeks until the WV State Cross Country Championship,
the Midland boys varsity would line up for the MSAC Championship marking
only the 2nd time they have raced on West Virginia soil this season.
Their other 2 races were Elite Invitationals in Kentucky and Ohio.
Jacob Burcham would lead his Knights in dominating fashion to the
team title making it 11 MSAC titles in a row. Burcham would take the
overall MSAC title for the 2nd year in a row and setting a New Course
record in the process with a time of 15:55. His teammates would not
disappointment coming in at 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 10th. These
runners were Tyler Salmons, Jeremy Waugh, Avery Campbell, Jared King,
Andrew Ferguson, and Ryan Smith all earning 1st team All MSAC. Making
the 2nd team All MSAC were David Jobe and Mason Dino.
The biggest question of the day; "Who will
be Midland's Top 7 ?"
Midland will be back in action next Thursday (October 21st) for the
Regional Championship to be held at the Teays Valley Wave Park in
Hurricane. The meet serves as the WV State Championship qualifier.
Midland will be limited to 7 boy and girl runners for the Regional meet.
10/12/10
Midland set for MSAC Championship
Midland's Boys & Girls XC teams are set to go on Wednesday for the
MSAC Championship at Meadow Park in Tornado, WV. The meet is hosted by
George Washington High School with the girls race at 4:45pm followed by
the boys race at 5:30pm.
Midland boys are the defending Champions and are favored to repeat on
Wednesday. Jacob Burcham is the defending individual champion and should
defend his title with his closest competitor nearly a minute behind his
season best.
On the girls side, Hurricane is the defending champion and should be
a tight race between Parkersburg, Hurricane, and Cabell Midland. Top
individuals should be Midland's Jorden Thornton, Parkersburg's Madison
Hill, and Hurricane's Tori Dent.

Burcham
comes in at 23rd on ESPNRise.com
Jacob Burcham is making some noise on the National level with his
recent ranking on the prestigious Dyestat Elite Boys Top 25. These 25
high school boy runners are picked from across the nation. There are 18
seniors, 4 juniors, and 3 sophomores ranked in the top 25. The following
was found on ESPNRise.com written by Steve Underwood who is the Senior
Editor for Dyestat.com.
Meanwhile, a growing number of fans of the sport on a national level
have become aware of Jacob Burcham*, especially since
last spring when the Midland Cabell (Ona, W. Va.) soph (then a freshman)
started attracting attention with his epic triples and, eventually, a
4:15.10 mile in the frosh race at NBN that scared the national class
record. Fans learned that Burcham had also excelled the previous fall
in WV while combining football and limited XC. Now that he’s decided to
put his eggs in the XC, he’s just been getting better and better, with
the latest effort last weekend – a 15:05 5k behind Mason (Mason, Ohio)
senior Zach Wills at the Midwest Meet of Champions –
elevating him into the top 25 for the first time.

Midland Strong at Midwest Meet of
Champions
After a 2 week training period since the Trinity Invitational,
Midland headed to Dublin, Ohio for the Midwest Meet of Champions to face
another top notch field. This marks only the 3rd time Midland has raced
this season and the strategy is paying off with big results each time
from the Midland runners.
The MMOC competition offered numerous elite teams and individuals in
all races along with a well groomed fast course. The temperatures were
near 60 degrees with a strong breeze throughout the course. However, the
breeze appeared not to slow down the runners too much and the meet
produced some fast times along with strong team showings. LaSalle would
come out on top with Medina and Cabell Midland rounding out the top 3
spots.
Jacob Burcham would lead his Knights again with a smart race strategy
to come from behind and finish 2nd overall. His 15:05 was only 4 ticks
behind Mason's, Zach Wills, 15:01 winning time. Burcham's 15:05 is the
top sophomore time in the nation and also West Virginia's top season
performance. Burcham wasn't the only Midland runner to produce an
impressive time. Tyler Salmons ran 15:55 to finish 24th overall followed
by a stellar performance from Sophomore Jeremy Waugh's 16:12. Ryan Smith
continues to stay consistent at 16:26 to finish 60th followed closely by
sophomore Avery Campbell's 16:30. Mason Dino continued to stay in
Midland's top 7 with his 16:59 followed by Steven Egnatoff's 17:13.
In the boys open race, Midland would finish a strong 2nd overall
behind powerhouse LaSalle. Midland appeared to have a lock on the team
title until David Jobe's allergies kicked in forcing him to fade from
the top 3 to 36th overall. It would be Jared King stepping up for
Midland to run a 17:07 to take 4th overall followed by Andrew Ferguson
10th place finish in 17:18. Matthew Edmunds would PR in 17:21 for 12th
overall followed by Freshman, Eric Wooten's 17:22 good enough for 16th
overall. Midland's bid on their "Elite 7" is forming into a fierce battle
for those 7 spots.
Due to Homecoming, Midland would only enter one runner in the girls race.
Standout, Jorden Thornton, would run a 19:40 placing her 42nd overall
among an elite field of 138 runners.

Midwest Meet of Champions offers Big
Challenge for Midland
The 2010 Midwest Meet of Champions is loaded with many of the top teams
and individuals throughout Ohio and surrounding states! Each of the
past 2 years the team champions at the MMOC have gone on to win big
school state titles. Magnificat and St Ignatius won titles in 2009 and
are back this year to challenge for the title. The MMOC course is flat
and very spectator friendly and we could see some blazing times on
October 2nd at Hilliard Darby High School!
Defending champion St Ignatius is led
by John Sweeney. They are currently
ranked #4 in Ohio but will likely encounter
several squads at the MMOC that will make it
very difficult to repeat. Medina has
a great pack. They are ranked #2 and have
been very impressive all season! Perennial
powers #5 Toledo St John's Jesuit
(led by Greg Turissini) and #6
Cincinnati LaSalle (led by Travis
Hawes) are very strong this year. West
Virginia's #1 team - Cabell Midland
is led by Jacob Burcham. His 15:19
5K is among the top prep times in the nation
for sophomores! #7 Mason is led by
2-time MMOC champion Zach Wills. He
holds the course record of 15:02 and is one
of the favorites to win on Saturday. #9
Dublin Coffman has raced very well this
fall. #11 Reynoldsburg has the
fastest front runners in Ohio with 3 guys at
15:45 or better! Add in teams from
Hudson (#12), Akron St Vincent-St
Mary (#1 in D2), Lakota West (#17), New
Albany (#18), Unioto (#5 D2), Sylvania
Northview (#23), Anderson, Brunswick,
Westerville Central, Revere, Olentangy
Liberty, Hilliard Bradley, Hilliard Darby,
Russia, Dover, Van Wert, Warren and
North Oldham (KY) you can see why this
meet is so competitive.
At least 20 guys have run sub 16 this season
and we could see some very quick times this
week! Wills has been the heavy
favorite each of the past 2 years and has to
be considered the favorite having won 2
cross country titles and a pair of state
track titles in his fabulous prep career.
It will not be easy to win a 3rd MMOC title
for Zach.
Seniors Josh Sabo (Revere) and
Mike Wallace (Sylvania Northview) will
be in the lead pack along with several young
runners. Look for Adrian Ross (Unioto),
Tsehaye Hiluf (Reynoldsburg) and
Jacob Burcham (Cabel Midland) to be near
the leaders as well. The biggest challenge
to Wills will likely come from fast rising
star Jordan Redd (Fairborn) who has
posted some great times without losing a
race this season.

but one runner setting huge PR's this season. Midland will not be back
in action for 2 weeks and will be gearing up for the Midwest Meet of

Burcham honorable
mention in pre-season National Rankings
After much National
attention this past track season, Burcham
continues to catch the eye of the nation
this cross country season. Burcham should
make some noise this cross country season
with his decision not to play football this
fall and devote his full attention to Cross
Country.
Midland's schedule will
give Burcham the opportunity to race against
some of the best runners in the nation at
the Trinity Invitational and Mid-West Meet
of Champions. He also plans to extend his
regular season and compete at the NXN
Southeast Regional National Qualifier in
late November.

Burcham & Thornton set New Course Records
On Saturday morning over 100 runners lined up for the
17th annual Bill Hill 2 mile Invitational. Jacob Burcham
wasted no time charging to the lead and setting a fast pace,
which ended in a new course record of 9:47. Burcham became the
first runner ever to break 10 minutes on the course. While Burcham was wiping the sweat from his face, Jorden Thornton
was kicking down the final stretch to set a new course
record of 12:22 in the female division. In less than 24
hours, Thornton played a soccer game in Beckley, drove back
home late, got up early to win a race, and drove back to
Beckley for another soccer game, which they won both games.
The boys put 8 runners in under sub 11:00 minute pace, which ranks
the best for the Bill Hill 2 mile in past history. Pre-season rankings puts
Midland currently number #1, however, the boys from Jefferson and
Preston have very strong teams and are contenders this coming XC season.
The girls team have the numbers out this year with a lot of new faces
in the crowd. They are currently ranked number #5 in the state of West
Virginia.
