A quick redirect near the finish line kept the day for Cabell Midland's Gretchen Mills from ending on a downer. Mills and George Washington's Olivia Ward were locked in a tight race Saturday morning when they ran onto Ray McCoy Track for the final 300 meters in the first Huntington Mountaintop Invitational on Huntington High's new cross country course. While most people head to Myrtle Beach, SC for their summer vacation, Jacob Burcham will be competing in the USA Youth World Trials attempting to earn a trip to Lille, France.
Burcham performances this past track season earned him a qualifying spot in the trials and if he finishes in the top 2, he should secure a spot on Team USA that will head to Lille, France to compete in the World Championship next week. Jacob will be competing in the 1500 meter USA Trial finals on Thursday morning, July 7th, at 10:30am. The team will be announced at 6:30pm on Wednesday evening. WINFIELD, W.Va. - Winfield High School scored a sweep Saturday in the Dick Dunlap Classic held at Winfield High School.
On the girls side, the Generals ruled in the distance races and relays to capture the title with 161 points. Bridgeport was second with 96 and Cabell Midland third with 67. On the boys side, Winfield enjoyed a strong showing in relays and won the title with 107 points. Huntington High was second with 94. Mary Zulauf won the 800 and Rachel Englund won the 1600 and 3200 to lead the Generals. Winfield won the 4x100, 4x200, 4x800 and shuttle hurdle relays. And in field events, the Generals got first in the high jump and long jump. Huntington's Safiyyah Mitchel won the 100 hurdles and placed second in the 300 hurdles. Ericka Budd won the shot put and placed third in the discus. POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The Hurricane girls came away with top honors Thursday night during the 2016 Paul Wood Track and Field Invitational held at Ohio Valley Bank Track and Field on the campus of Point Pleasant High School in Mason County.
The Lady Indians proved to be the best of 13 teams after scoring 145 points, which was 30 points better than the field. Point Pleasant was second overall with 115 points, while Ohio Valley Christian (45) and Wahama (35) respectively placed fifth and sixth. The Lady Knights won four of the 18 events, including a pair of win by Aislyn Hayman in the shot put (37-2) and discus (117-9) events. Ariat Rollins and Gabrielle Koons also scored a one-two finish in the pole vault with matching heights of 6 feet, which Rollins won on a tiebreaker. The quartet of Bri Reymond, Kyla Scott, Carlee Dabney and Teagan Hay also won the 4x100m relay event with a time of 53.22 seconds. Scott, Hay, Sydney Moore and Madison Hatfield collectively placed second in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:54.95. Cierra Porter was the high jump (5-0) runner-up and Morgan Roush was second in the discus with a heave of 93 feet, 7 inches. HURRICANE - Cabell Midland boys and Winfield girls were team winners Thursday at the Hurricane Sheetz Invitational high school track and field meet.
